The idea was born during a casual conversation with a friend pilot. He said that from the moment of landing at the airport, only by the Gate his plane burned more than 2 tons of aviation fuel! What a waste ..
The exact calculation showed us this scale:
936.750.000 liters of fuel are used during aircraft taxiing procedures at three European airports: Frankfurt, London – Heathrow and Paris – Charles de Gaulle. The above figure is true provided that each taxiing procedure does not exceed 10 minutes.
If the ATS is implemented the fuel cost savings at three European airports: Frankfurt, London – Heathrow and Paris – Charles de Gaulle will amount to 749.400.000 EUR
The following amounts of gases are released into the environment during aircraft taxiing procedures at three European airports: Frankfurt, London – Heathrow and Paris – Charles de Gaulle:
HC - - hydrocarbons - 1.602.850 kg
NOx - carcinogenic nitric oxides - 4.309.050 kg
CO - lethal damp, carbon monoxide - 19.315.799 kg
CO2 - greenhouse gas – carbon dioxide - 3.465.980 kg
Another, equally important advantages of the system include:
Environment protection. Presently an extremely high level of environment pollution In a small area is observed.
A significant noise limitation will reduce working conditions inconveniences at the airport and living conditions inconveniences in its adjacent areas.
Fuel economy will have a positive influence on airlines profitability resulting in lower fares.
A decrease of aircraft fuel quantity needed for a flight will result in further costs reduction.
An airport staff number reduction will result in lower overhead.
A faster and more precise aircraft taxiing/towing operation will increase airport traffic.
The system reliability is assured thanks to, among other factors, its simple design. In winter the system is heated.
A relatively low system cost. The return on investment within a year at the maximum.
The system installation causes little inconvenience to the airport. The assembly procedures take place during regular airport operation.
Airports equipped with the system are more competitive in comparison with those without it.
An increase of taxiing aircraft safety level. The system prevents the taxiing/towed aircraft from getting too close to each other when the visibility is limited - fog, rain or snow precipitations.
