Medical Simulation Technologies
Your patient should not be TEE training model
Medical Simulation Technologies is an innovative start-up company which develops and implements medical simulators for the teaching of medical personnel.
Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is one of the main diagnostic tools of contemporary cardiology. It can provide high quality imaging of the heart due to the position of the probe in the esophagus, located close to the heart. However, obtaining clear diagnostic images is very demanding. It requires not only a detailed anatomical and clinical knowledge of the heart, but also the practical skills needed to properly manipulate the TEE probe. It is important to be able to obtain diagnostic standard cross-sections of the heart, without excessive manipulation and in minimal time, ensuring the study is accurately diagnostic, while minimizing discomfort to the patient. Coordination of the 5 different settings of the probe is difficult and the learning curve in using the equipment is long, particularly when a trainee works under stress caused by patient discomfort.
Our simulator gives a realistic feeling of the probe operation in a patient, thanks to the technologically advanced manipulator connected with a phantom, and unique software based on a three-dimensional dataset obtained from computed tomography (CT) scanning of a real patient. The 3D data is used to obtain 2D cross-sections driven by the probe position and manipulator settings. The advantage of our solution is the capability to use the CT data from a range of real patients with numerous pathologies, giving the chance to create a broad library of very realistic medical simulations and not just artificial models. Moreover, from patient to patient, there are anatomical differences in the heart and esophagus positions making successful probe manipulation even more demanding. The advantages and innovation of our approach were confirmed by a European patent (EP2538398).
