Fast Antibiotic Selection Tool
When your baby is sick every second counts. But that doesn’t mean doctors should prescribe antibiotics on a hunch. Unfortunately, they don’t have a choice since antibiotic selection takes over 48h and requires lab. Fortunately, we have a solution to reduce time tenfold with lower costs and no lab!
Antibiotic therapy leads to overall body emaciation and its effects often leads to hospitalization. Therapy should be precisely matched to the bacteria that cause the disease for treatment to be effective and quick.
Current method of antibiotics selection is antibiogram. The test requires specialized personnel and a laboratory. It delays the implementation of the treatment because of the minimum time required is 48h. The cost of the test makes it unusable for every patient.
ECDPC reported 7 drug-resistant strains of bacteria in 27 EU countries. Rapid development of antibiotic resistance is caused due to excessive and unjustified prescription of antibiotics. According to CDC 2013 report 50% of antibiotics prescribed by doctors are unnecessary.
The Project aims for the possibility of quick and effective antibiotic selection. This will reduce the mortality caused by improper treatment of bacterial diseases. The precise selection of an antibiotic for infection treatment will also slow down the drug-resistance process.
Polish National Health Fund pays GP doctor 2,5 $ for examination of one patient and performing antibiogram test costs more than 6 times that. The GP assigns broad-spectrum of antibiotics or accordingly to his experience. The wrong selection of antibiotics increases the length of treatment and fasten the bacteria immunization.
The Project significant decreases testing time and minimize costs. Laboratory will not be required and the test can be carried by untrained personnel. It will resolve the problem of lack in funding for patients testing.
